So you know that comic page of Dark Cacao with a picture of Dark Choco in his locket?
One thing to note here is that a majority of the ‘I’ pronouns likely come from Korean omitting pronouns when a person being talked about has already been specified (meaning the majority of the I pronouns should actually say He instead, as they’re referring to Choco for the most part.) But Dark Cacao being shorter than Dark Choco… I like to think they’re both just REALLY tall and I know the comics aren’t canon, but it would be so funny if Dark Cacao was a short king and Pure Vanilla was an even shorter king.

I love how only Affogato’s followers are blinded like this, all wearing his symbol. Everyone else in the Dark Cacao kingdom has their eyes unveiled. (Insert Something about how cult followers are everyday people and often lured in by the promise of a better tomorrow and then rid of their ability to see/all of God’s angels are blinded by the light of their halos in favor of serving his ‘holiness’ and at least the demons down below have half a mind to know what’s going on since they broke their halos.)
I wonder if Dark Choco having his eye scarred is a symbol of how the darkness half-blinded him to the truth as well, considering as a young prince, his eyes were intact, and only after turning to the darkness does he have that scar. Dark Cacao’s kingdom went hard on the symbolism I think.
The only thing I would change about this is that I’d probably put Golden Cheese where Moonlight is. This is exactly how I thought it would turn out, and exactly what all of these cookies have earned and what they deserve.
‘Black Pearl is overrated’ only works so far until you realize that Black Pearl’s story update was the second best story of the entire year (and one of the best CRK updates of all time,) her character was given great depth via her backstory and the relationships it chooses to explore, her costume bond with Sherbet gives us more insight into her character, and her Crunchy Dream single-handedly sent a specific side of Cookie Run Twitter down a rabbit hole upon the release of A Mermaid’s Tale. Coupled with the fact that she had an interesting story and gameplay update upon release as well, the only reason I’m not surprised she isn’t higher up is because the City of Wizards was the best story update of the year, if not of all CRK. Dark Cacao’s may be my favorite, but his and Moonlight and Stardust’s might be fighting for relevancy and polish.
I can see why Golden Cheese isn’t higher, though- her update wasn’t as polished and left some things to be desired. Her sacrifice is temporary, we ended up getting every new story cookie besides the second most relevant one, some issues with pacing at the beginning, all things that can contribute. However, I would say the amount of personality she’s given (she’s one of the best written women in all of the Cookie Run franchise,) more than constitutes any top spot. I hope we see more of her in the future.
Frost Queen’s update gave us a look at her backstory, sure, but it was lacking in comparison to almost every other update of the year. When you put it next to even this one with Linzer and Creme Brûlée, you see Devsis sort of phoned it in with her little update, down to the fact that it’s half the time of a normal legendary update. Both of her releases are less about her and more about the cookies that surround her, but it was nice to see Frost Queen again, and get to shine light on the softer parts of her heart.
Moonlight and Stardust’s story do more than just build their characters. They build the world of dreams, the lives of the wizards (and, by consequence, work to show just how human these entities are, something she does not see in them to this day,) builds on previous themes introduced in the story, gave us character building in the form of dreams for all of the other Kingdom cookies, brought us the costume bond that first started us down the path of SeaMoon being explicitly canonized in Kingdom, and gave us a springboard to move forward into any segue they wished. I don’t think there’s a single thing I would change about the City of Wizards story or any of its subsequent accompanying supplemental stories, which is not true of any other update on this list. We can also come back to visit the City of Wizards one day, as this place has given itself such plot relevancy, it would be a crime not to.
I’m a bit sad Pitaya isn’t as far up as I want them to be, but it can’t be helped. I’ll make points in their favor by saying this was more than I thought we’d get for character building in their update, and that the added backstory and depth added with White Lily makes Pitaya as personally involved in the way the story has turned as the ancients. However, that particular piece has thrown the timeline in Kingdom for a loop.
Anyway, WLW win again. If you don’t think these characters earned their current spots, I invite you to re-evaluate why you think so. These spots are also subject to change as time goes on, so the fact that I’ve seen people complaining about the top roster already is a bit frustrating when I’ve barely touched social media this month in the first place.
